Dilo
Dictation from the menu bar. Press a shortcut, speak, and the text goes where you type. Whisper runs on your Mac, so nothing leaves it.
Install
Before you start. The first time you open Dilo, it downloads its speech model (3.1 GB, once) and asks to use the microphone.
- Download Dilo-0.1.0.zip
- Open the zip and drag Dilo.app to your Applications folder.
How it works
Dictate anywhere
Press ⌥Space in any app and speak. Press it again to stop. A small window at the bottom of the screen shows that Dilo is listening.
The text goes where you type
Dilo pastes the text where your cursor was. If you switched apps, or there is no text field, it copies the text instead.
Pause or cancel
Use the buttons on the small window. Esc cancels.
Find old dictations
Click the menu bar icon to see all your dictations by day. Type to search, and press Space to hear one again.
Try again
If a transcription fails, Dilo keeps the audio. Click Retry, or Re-transcribe any dictation.
Make it yours
In Settings, pick the shortcut, the microphone and the language (Auto, English or Spanish).
Good to know
- Everything happens on your Mac. Your voice and text never leave it.
- The speech model uses about 3.5 GB of memory while loaded. It loads when you press the shortcut and unloads after 15 minutes without use.
- To paste, Dilo needs Accessibility access (System Settings → Privacy & Security). Without it, Dilo copies the text instead.
- Audio takes about 1.9 MB per minute. In Settings you can delete it after 7 or 30 days; the text stays.
